Mikel Lawandy was a beacon of light

To the Editor:

Mikel Lawandy was an exemplary student/athlete at Bayonne High School. Upon graduation, recognition continued at New Jersey institute of Technology. He was a wonderful representative of both institutions.
Credit comes from three sources. Home: growing into a fine young man due to loving, caring parents. Church: having a strong moral value system developed from religious tenets. Himself: being mature, he was well aware of life’s realities beyond one’s chronological years.
All of the above plus desire to be involved was the motivation to serve as a trustee on the BBOED. Unlike other panel members, who have a “see no evil, hear no evil, tell no evil” manner, Mikel was outspoken but with a courteous, gracious, respectful approach.
Mikel was a “beacon-of-light” for all children (quality education), parents (safe setting), teachers (fair contract), and citizens (fiscal raise). This was regardless of race, creed, or religion. He wanted to serve the community by being responsive to their needs.
Your role will not be forgotten. Plus, you will always be one of Bill’s (Broderick) boys.
