Private funeral services have been held for former police officer George T. Alburtus Jr., 74, of Lodi. He passed away peacefully at home Jan. 26 after a fight well fought against cancer. Born and raised in Jersey City, he was the son of George T. Sr. and Helen (Reilly) Alburtus. After graduating from William L. Dickinson High School, George enlisted in the Army where he was a rifle sharpshooter and received the National Defense Service Medal.
In 1970, he joined the North Bergen Police Department where his career spanned twenty-nine years. George was a member of the North Bergen PBA Local No. 18, the New Jersey State PBA No. 600, FOP New Jersey Lodge No. 46 and was a past president and an active member of the Police Athletic League.
George will be remembered by his wife of nearly thirty-eight years, Patricia J. Alburtus. He was the father of Susan, Lisa and Audra and her husband Anthony Ayala. His greatest joy was being Papa and best friend to his grandson, Jackson George. He was the brother of Margaret, Alfred and the late Jackie and Frankie. George is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, in-laws and cousins. He also leaves behind his canine companion, Brutus.
