UPDATE: Transformer explosion darkens western Jersey City and briefly blips Hoboken

HUDSON COUNTY — Parts of western Jersey City lost power after 11 p.m. on Saturday night and remained in the dark for nearly four hours — and residents five miles away in Hoboken lost power for just a few seconds — after an apparent transformer explosion in Jersey City. Social media users said they saw a flash in the sky over Jersey City. Later, users on Twitter and Facebook said they had been told that a vehicle crashed into a transformer on Kennedy Blvd., causing the problem.
Shortly before midnight, PSEG’s website reported six neighborhoods in western Jersey City without power, causing outages for several thousand residents.
Around 1:30 a.m., with residents still in the dark, the city of Jersey City Tweeted: “PSEG crews are en route to work on the blackout issue. Please visit PSEG website, http://www.pseg.com to view the outage map. Check in on your neighbors and please be safe.”
The website contained little information, but shortly before 3 a.m., PSEG updated their outage map, which you can reach directly by clicking HERE. At that time, it showed that power had been restored to all but a few households.
Many residents into the wee hours were asking what had happened (see comments left below).
If your power just came back on and you’re finding this story…top o’ the morning to you. Have a nice Sunday.
