68, died on December 5 at Newton Hospital in Newton, NJ with her daughter Mayra Padilla by her side. Born in Campo Florida, Cuba, Delia lived in Bayonne since her arrival from Cuba at age 16. Delia was a daughter, mother, sister and aunt who loved family. A long time employee at Bayonne Hospital, she was an advocate and supporter of equal pay/fair wages, immigrant rights and worked selflessly to help those in need and underdogs of all kinds. At age 38, she was diagnosed with cancer and later mental illness. She survived cancer and struggled with mental illness and was very open about her challenges in an effort to help destigmatize the illness and its sufferers. She was grateful to all her doctors for their care of her over the years. She is remembered by her daughter Mayra, brothers and sisters, nieces and nephews and friends. In lieu of flowers, her daughter kindly requests that you either donate to NAMI (the National Association of Mental Illness, www.nami.org) in Delia Delgado’s memory or email a note with a remembrance of her mother at mayra.padilla@gmail.com.
