Woman fatally stabbed in Union City

UNION CITY – Union City Police found a woman with fatal stab wounds in a local residence Monday, according to a press release from the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office.
Police received a report of someone stabbed at a New York Avenue address that morning, the release said. After arriving, they encountered a man allegedly with a knife inside the building. They were able to secure the knife and detain the man.
Officials have identified that man as Kevin Cortes, 26, from Union City. They later transported him to Palisades Medical Center for evaluation.
Officers found the woman on the building’s third floor, the release said. They identified her as Giselle Bravo, 20, from Queens, NY.
Though EMT’s administered life saving aid to Bravo, she was later pronounced dead at Jersey City Medical Center. Her cause and manner of death are pending an investigation by the Regional Medical Examiner’s Office.
The Prosecutor’s Homicide Unit has charged Cortes with murder, a first-degree crime; possession of a weapon (knife) for an unlawful purpose, a third-degree crime; and unlawful possession of a weapon (knife), a fourth-degree crime.
