Hudson County Democratic Committee chooses replacement for Prieto in Assembly
Members of the Hudson County Democratic Committee representing the 32nd Legislative District voted March 28 to appoint Pedro Mejia, a Secaucus resident, to a vacancy in the State Assembly.
Assemblyman-select Mejia will be sworn-in soon and will run for the unexpired term created by the resignation of Assemblyman Vincent Prieto in the June Primary Election.
Upon taking office, Mejia will become the first Dominican-American immigrant to serve in the State Legislature.
“I would like to thank the committee members and the Democratic leaders of Hudson County for their faith and confidence in my ability to represent my new constituents,” Mejia said in a press release. “This is a tremendous honor and I pledge to work as hard as I can to live up to it.”
Born in the Dominican Republic, Assemblyman-select Mejia immigrated to the United States at the age of 15 and became a naturalized citizen in 2000. A successful small business owner in the residential real estate industry, Mejia is married with three children and he has lived in Secaucus for the last 11 years.
“Diversity is so important to making sure that we as elected officials represent the interests of our constituents well, so I am excited to welcome Pedro Mejia as the first Dominican-American to serve in the legislature,” said North Bergen Mayor and State Sen. Nicholas Sacco. “I know that Pedro is a smart, talented person who will work extremely hard to represent the people and I look forward to working closely with him.”

Housing Authority hosts two ‘Senior Moments’ health events
One year after launching the NBHA Senior Moments Project, the Housing Authority partnered with the ACT NOW Foundation and Well Care Health Programs, LLC to hold two recent events geared toward improving the quality of life for senior residents, on March 14 and March 28. More than 100 seniors attended. Although focused mainly on Alzheimer’s awareness, the events attracted numerous other partner agencies to dispense health information on a variety of topics.
Other participants were Advanced Physical Medicine Center, a pain management clinic specializing in the relief of back, neck, and joint pain; Visiting Homemaker Services, providers of home health aides and cleaning services; and Active Day of North Bergen, a senior care center ensuring that residents remain active members of society.
In honor of Easter, Well Care raffled off two gift baskets brimming with health products. They also donated healthy croissants, while Active Day of North Bergen contributed a cake and Advance Physical Medicine Center brought cookies.
The Senior Moment Project is funded by a $246,000 ROSS (Resident Opportunities and Self-Sufficiency) Grant received by the NBHA.
In its first year, North Bergen’s Senior Moments Project received a 2017 National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials (NAHRO) Award of Merit and Certificate of Outstanding Achievement.
