Secaucus police arrest woman for allegedly leaving child in vehicle

SECAUCUS–Police arrested a Jersey City woman who allegedly left her 22-month-old child unattended in her car Friday afternoon, according to a department blotter. The incident happened outside the town’s TJ Maxx department store. Officers noticed the child in the car, locked, allegedly with the windows rolled up, according to Police Capt. Dennis Miller. The temperature was around the 80s that day.

The officers were about to smash the windows to save the child, when the mother emerged from the store and said she’d been using the bathroom. Fortunately, the child was asleep at the time, Miller said.

The 43-year-old female, who name was not disclosed, was charged with endangering the welfare of a child. Officers issued her a summons and released her. Miller said the child was released back to the mother. However, child services have been notified of the incident, he said.

The department did not release the mother’s name, in an effort to protect the child, Miller said.
