SECAUCUS–Those hoping for a recreational marijuana dispensary in Secaucus — to join the current medicinal marijuana location — may have to abandon those dreams for now.
At their July 24 meeting, the Secaucus mayor and Town Council introduced an ordinance that would disallow selling or growing recreational marijuana in town. The ordinance would not ban people from smoking weed recreationally (should the state greenlight it), as that would be purely zoning based.
Mayor Michael Gonnelli said the ordinance’s intent was to get ahead of the ball, in case the state legalizes weed. “We’re trying to get a jump on this, before Governor Phil Murphy adopts it,” he admitted.
The ordinance also does not infringe on medical marijuana in any way, as that has been legal statewide since 2010.
Harmony Dispensary, the first medical marijuana dispensary in Hudson County, opened on Meadowlands Parkway last month. Read about it in this weekend’s Reporter newspapers or come back to hudsonreporter.com starting Sunday.
The final hearing on the ordinance will take place on Aug. 28.
