HOBOKEN — Hoboken resident author Dawn Raffel will read her new book The Strange Case of Dr. Couney: How a European Showman Saved Thousands of American Babies on Thursday, Sept. 27, 7 p.m.
A thrilling tale of a doctor who revolutionized neonatal care and saved over seven thousand babies. An intersection of ebullient entrepreneurship, enlightened pediatric care, and the wild culture of world’s fairs at the beginning of the American Century.
As Raffel recounts, Dr. Couney used incubators and careful nursing to keep previously doomed infants alive, while displaying these babies alongside sword swallowers, bearded ladies, and burlesque shows at Coney Island, Atlantic City, and venues across the nation.
Another prominent local author, Caroline Leavitt, will be on hand to interview Dawn about the book. Refreshments will be served.
