On Sept. 28 and 29, Hoboken resident Douglas Taurel, actor and creator of the acclaimed solo show The American Soldier, will perform both of his solo shows, The American Soldier and An American Soldier’s Journey Home, back to back at Union Performing Arts Center’s Hamilton Stage, 360 Hamilton St., Rahway.
The American Soldier is based on real stories and factual accounts from actual soldier and family member letters written from the American Revolution all the way through current day Afghanistan. It examines the internal struggles and problems that soldiers and their families face when warriors return home from combat.
The American Soldier’s Journey Home weaves together archival images, music, and diary excerpts to narrate a soldier’s entrance into the service and his experiences in World War 1 France. In period uniform and using minimum props, Taurel conveys the intensity and terror of trench warfare, the jubilation of the troops following the Armistice, and the soldiers love for his family.
