A mass of Christian burial was celebrated Sept. 17 at St. Mark’s RC Church in Sea Girt, for John Harry Ertle, better known as J. Harry Ertle, 95, of Jersey City and Sea Girt. He peacefully passed away on Sept. 13 with his family at his Sea Girt home. Harry was a proud Hudson County resident, born and raised in Sacred Heart parish in Jersey City. He was a graduate of the Peddie School ’43, then drafted into the U.S. Army, and served as a Master Sgt. at the Western Pacific Base Command Headquarters on Saipan in the Mariana Islands. After WWII, he sold insurance for the Knights of Columbus and started his employment with the County of Hudson while attending Seton Hall University at night. Most of his career was working for the Hudson County Police Department as Administrative Clerk, retiring after 43 years. Harry was a 4th Degree member of the Jersey City Council of the Knights of Columbus, member of the Holy Name Society, a communicant of St. Mark’s RC Church and a member of the Belmar Fishing Club. Harry was predeceased by his parents, Harry and Mae Ertle, as well as by his wife of 55 years, Virginia in 2009. He is survived by his daughters, Deidre Anne Ertle, and Nadine Mae Ertle Sullivan, his grandson, John Ertle Sullivan, son-in-law Michael L. Sullivan and his brother, Rev. Thomas J. Ertle, O.P.
