Mother of former governor passes away

A funeral mass will be offered on Nov. 14 at St. Joseph’s Church for Veronica “Ronnie” McGreevey, mother of former Gov. Jim McGreevey. She peacefully passed away surrounded by her family on Nov. 7.

Friends may visit with the family at St. Joseph’s R.C. Church, High Street, Carteret, Tuesday, Nov. 13, from 4 p.m. to 7 pm.

She was born in the Greenville section of Jersey City, where she attended St. Patrick’s RC Church. She was a graduate of Holy Family Academy in Bayonne, St. Vincent’s Nursing School of NYC, and was a graduate of Seton Hall University, where she met Jack McGreevey, her husband of 62 years.

The McGreeveys moved to Carteret and were active parishioners at St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church.

Ronnie attended Columbia University where she graduated with a M.A. and M.Ed.
Her nursing leadership positions ranged from Head Nurse and Supervisor of Medicine at Jersey City Medical Center to active roles on the Board of Directors of the New Jersey League of Nursing, the New Jersey Board of Nursing, along with several nursing academic institutions.

Ronnie shared her commitment to quality nursing as an associate professor at Middlesex Community College, and instructor of nursing at Muhlenberg School of Nursing. Until this past month, Ronnie tutored nursing students to improve their academic achievement and nursing care.

Ronnie and Jack McGreevey were the parents of three children: Jim McGreevey, Caroline (McGreevey) Jones, and Sharon McGreevey, and grandchildren Morag and Jacqueline McGreevey, and Christopher and Catherine Jones.
