Hoboken Grace Community Church will hold its fourth annual Christmas Exchange in early December, giving the community a chance to help make a memorable Christmas for families in need. Those interested have the opportunity to brighten up the lives of children and their families by adopting a family at HobokenChristmas.com. They’ll receive a Christmas wish list of needs for that specific family.
Wish lists could include a variety of items, from winter hats and gloves, to grocery store gift cards or some of the latest toys.
Hoboken Grace officials say they have seen the involvement of the community grow year after year. This year the Hoboken Police PBA, Hoboken PSOA, and Fire Department Union will join in the adoption of families.
The Exchange takes place on Dec. 7 and 8, and registration has already opened for community members to adopt a child or a family. This year, the Christmas Exchange will provide toys, clothing, and needed toiletries to more than 1,000 families in Hoboken.
Hoboken Grace has partnered with the Hoboken Housing Authority, HOPES, North Hudson Community Action Corps , Hoboken Family Planning, The Jubilee Center TRUE Mentors, In Jesus Name Charities, Hoboken Early 100 and school counselors to help identify families in need.
The idea for the event came four years ago, when one church attendee decided to love families on her own. In 2014, Kara Cohen of Hoboken loaded a U-Haul with her husband and in-laws and distributed gifts to families at the Hoboken Housing Authority. The following year, Hoboken Grace joined Kara in distributing gifts all over the city to children.
“It’s so nice to bring people that little bit of happiness,” said Cohen. “It filled me in a way I wasn’t expecting.”
Supporting a child or family could cost as little as $25. Gifts are dropped off on Dec. 7 and 8 and Hoboken Grace “elves” deliver them to the families. Volunteers are also needed for the event. For more details visit HobokenChristmas.com.
