Transportation, budgeting grants, hires, and appointees on the Dec. 19 agenda

The Board of Education held a meeting on Dec. 19, which detailed staffing updates, the renewal of transportation contracts, and budgetary issues such as federal funding received through the Elementary and Secondary Education Act.

The board has $248,471 in carryover money from the 2017-2018 Local Education Agency Application; the carryover money will be used throughout 2019.

In federal funding for the year, North Bergen Schools received Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) grants in the following amounts:

Title I: $3,237,942
Title II: $424,138
Title III: $161,448
Title III Immigrant: $49,225
Title IV: $195,507

The Board awarded a $75,000 auditing contract for the rest of the 2019 school year to Lerch, Vinci, and Higgins. Lerch, Vinci, and Higgins will also provide financial expertise to the Board of Education in hourly rates that will not exceed $50,000 for the year.

New hires and appointees

Lisa Gonzalez was hired by the Board of Education as a math teacher in the high school.

An additional technology clerk was hired for a one-year contract to assist the Technology Department.

The high school wrestling team appointed a new volunteer coach, Robert Dabal, who was a wrestler for North Bergen High School, winning four consecutive Region 4 championships.

The board appointed staff members and funding for an after-school book club, using a portion of the Title I grant, for the rest of the 2018-2019 year.

The high school will use a grant for the Hudson County Juvenile Community Service Project. Abel Cabrera, a tech support staff member, was appointed as a mentor for the program.
