Resident arrested for alleged drug possession
Hoboken resident Jose Quinones, age 68, was arrested on April 29 at 8:07 p.m. He was charged with possession of a controlled dangerous substance, possession of prescription legend drugs, and possession of drug paraphernalia.
While on patrol, officer Steven Albert saw a 1996 Chevrolet Cavalier leaving the Hoboken Housing area at a high speed. While checking the vehicle’s registration he found that the registration had expired. Albert then conducted a motor vehicle stop near First and Monroe streets. When he neared he saw Quinones allegedly moving items in the vehicle. As Quinones tried to locate the car’s paperwork, Albert saw a defaced prescription bottle allegedly in the cup holder. Quinones was allegedly nervous, and his hands were shaking, and his answers to the officer’s questions were allegedly evasive. Officers Michael Straten and Sam Williams arrived as backup, and Albert asked Quinones to step out of the car. While outside, Albert saw crack cocaine allegedly on the driver’s side floor and in the cup holder as well as a glass vial allegedly containing cocaine residue and scouring type pads commonly used to smoke crack cocaine. The prescription bottle allegedly contained more than 40 Cyclobenzaprine pills commonly used as a muscle relaxer.
Quinones was placed under arrest and transported to headquarters where he was processed and released with a summons to appear in court, as well as several motor vehicle summonses.
Man charged with DWI after car accident
Union City resident Matthew Casazza, age 41, was arrested on April 25. He was charged with driving while intoxicated, driving while intoxicated in a school zone, reckless driving, and driving with a suspended license.
Officers were sent to the 300 block of Adams Street on the report of a motor vehicle accident. When they arrived they saw Casazza standing outside the vehicle with the driver of the other vehicle. Casazza’s vehicle had been damaged and was now parked.
As the officers spoke to Casazza they noticed he was allegedly swaying from side to side, his eyes were watery, and his speech was slurred. Officer Dylan Archilla conducted a field sobriety test which Casazza was allegedly unable to perform. He was placed under arrest and transported to headquarters. While there, a breath sample was taken and he was found to allegedly be above the legal limit. Once processed, he received several summonses and was released to a responsible party.
Out-of-towners charged with possession
On Tuesday, April 23, at 2:15 a.m. Derrick Gwynn, 22, of Vernon, Conn. and Zynique Marcano, age 21, of Brooklyn were arrested and charged with possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. Gwynn was additionally charged with possession of drugs in a motor vehicle, and driving the wrong way down a one way.
Officers Harold Milne and Tyler Soto saw a 2001 Honda Civic allegedly drive the wrong way on a one way, north on Willow Avenue from Observer Highway. The officers conducted a motor vehicle stop a short distance away.
According to a police report, as the officers approached the vehicle and spoke to the driver, they smelled raw marijuana allegedly coming from inside. The officers were also able to see in plain view what appeared to be several marijuana cigarettes allegedly in the ashtray.
Gwynn, who was the driver, was asked to step out of the vehicle and was placed under arrest. Officers then asked the passenger, Marcano, to step out of the vehicle. As he did so, they saw several clear plastic baggies of suspected marijuana allegedly on the seat where he was sitting. He was also placed under arrest.
Both men were transported to headquarters to be processed and received summonses for the offenses.
Wrong way!
North Bergen resident Jessenia Pineda, 26, was arrested and charged on Friday, April 19, at 2:50 a.m. with driving while intoxicated, reckless driving, and driving the wrong way on a one way street, according to Hoboken police.
While on patrol, Officers Samuel Flores and Dennis Figueroa, Jr. saw a vehicle allegedly traveling north, the wrong way, up Hudson Street almost colliding with other vehicles on the roadway. The officers were able to stop the vehicle at Newark and Hudson streets.
As they approached, they asked the driver to lower the window and immediately smelled alcohol allegedly coming from inside. The driver was asked to step out so that a Field Sobriety Test could be conducted. Officer Jayla Vega arrived and after conducting the test, determined the driver to allegedly be impaired.
The driver, Pineda, was placed under arrest and transported to headquarters for processing. At headquarters, a breath sample was provided, and she was allegedly above the legal limit. She received several motor vehicle summonses and was later released to a responsible party.
Man charged after alleged failure to stop at stop sign
On Monday, April 22, at 3:30 a.m. Jersey City resident Malvin Rios, 46, was arrested and charged with having an unregistered scooter, failure to exhibit a drivers license, failure to exhibit insurance, operating without a helmet, driving under the influence in a school zone, driving under the influence, reckless driving, driving with a suspended drivers license, three counts of bail jumping, and hindering arrest.
According to a police report, while on patrol, Officers Harold Milne and Enrico Gnassi observed the defendant on a scooter allegedly disregard a stop sign at Seventh and Monroe streets. The scooter allegedly did not have a visible registration and the rider was allegedly not wearing a helmet.
The officers stopped the scooter and approached the rider. They immediately noticed his alleged slurred speech and glassy eyes. A field sobriety test was conducted, and he was found to be allegedly impaired. He was transported to headquarters for processing. A breath sample was given, and it allegedly did not register a reading. Officers attempted to reach a Drug Recognition Expert but were not able to. The rider was processed and later remanded to the Hudson County Rehabilitation Center.
That’s not a prescription
Hoboken resident Nicolas Garcia, 25, was arrested on Monday, April 15, and charged with possession with intent to distribute, possession with intent to distribute within 500 feet of public housing, possession with intent to distribute within 1,000 feet of a school, possession of drug paraphernalia, and burglary, according to Hoboken police.
Officers David DiMartino, William Bullock, Marc Lombardi, and Daniel Grossi were conducting a Quality of Life check of 311 Harrison when DiMartino saw Garcia, who is known not to be a resident, enter the building and take the elevator to the fifth floor. As DiMartino was using the stairs, he heard the arrestee call out as if he was expecting someone.
As the arrestee came into sight, DiMartino observed him allegedly opening a prescription bottle. Upon seeing the officer Garcia allegedly attempted to shove the bottle into his waistband as he walked away. Garcia was apprehended, and the bottle was found to allegedly contain 23 wax folds of suspected heroin.
Garcia was processed and sent to the Hudson County Rehabilitation Facility.
