Funeral services took place May 10 for Alice May Hamouns Martin, 95. She was predeceased by her parents, grandmother Matilda Brown, sister Elizabeth Cook, husband Joseph Martin and son Joseph Craig Martin. She attended Eastside High School in Paterson then was married to Joseph Martin for 53 years where they lived in Jersey City and had four children Cynthia Burgess, Marilyn Swepson, Joseph C. Martin and Michele Martin. Over the years, Alice was employed by Fairmont Hospital in Jersey City, worked for the Jersey City Board of Education then after 28 years of service in New York, in 1998, she retired from the Willow Brook State School in Staten Island, NY. She was a resident of the Alaris Health at the Atrium, an Assisted Living Facility, for 15 years where she was active in social activities/trips, made many special friendships with the staff, nursing aides and residents. She was well liked there and appreciated their positive responses to her. While in her early 80’s, she discovered a hidden talent that was finally exposed when she had several art shows in Jersey City. Her skilled artwork of black/white and color pencil drawings was complimented by many who viewed her detailed artwork. She leaves behind to cherish her memory daughters Cynthia, Marilyn and Michele, grandchildren George Swepson, Christine Burgess, Tawanda Wilkerson, Joanne Stevens/Edmonds and Angelia Davis, her sister-in-law Madeline Comerie, along with her great-grandchildren, her great-great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
