Earlier this afternoon, a dump truck on top of a parking garage at 8101 Tonnelle Ave. in North Bergen plummeted through the top two levels of parking decks.
The truck landed with its nose pointed upward, indicating that the rear of the vehicle took most of the impact.
According to officials who responded to the scene, the driver sustained a minor injury. No one was hurt in the resulting structural collapse. The truck and debris fell onto a ramp, without damaging to other vehicles. Authorities are urging residents to stay clear of the area.
Officials haven’t yet determined what caused the structure to collapse under the weight of the dump truck. Signs posted outside the parking garage read “No Trucks,” and “Weight Limit 6,000 LBS,” indicating that the truck may have been over the weight that the parking deck was designed to support.
