A funeral mass was celebrated June 4 at St. Mary’s Church for Dr. Alfonso J. Teresi, 94, of Clifton. He passed away on Wednesday, May 29. Born and raised in Hoboken, he worked at a young age in the family owned business, Marie’s Bakery, on 2nd Street. He was the oldest son of nine children; his surviving siblings are his brother Louis Teresi and sisters, Margaret Sorrentino and Phyllis Sicherer. Dr. Teresi was a veteran of World War II where he suffered an injury but was determined to continue his education earning a combined bachelors and masters in chemistry. After being a professor of chemistry his interest turned to medicine. He earned his Doctorate at the University of Bologna, Italy in 1955. Dr. Teresi specialized in pediatrics practicing in New Jersey where he met his bride, Barbara Coady, a registered nurse at the Margaret Hague Hospital in Jersey City. The couple lived and established a private pediatric center in Jersey City, while also becoming the director of Pediatrics of Family Health Center at Jersey City Medical Center. Dr. Teresi was to receive the Special Award of Recognition from the governor of New Jersey in 1993 recognized for his work spearheading the AFDC Immunization Project, a program that brought mobile immunization centers to various locations within Hudson County that may not have had access to receiving immunizations. This program soon was implemented nationwide. Dr. Teresi and his wife started their family living in Jersey City for some time but as the family grew they moved to the suburb of Nutley. In addition to his work in Jersey City, Dr. Teresi acquired the position of school physician for Nutley Board of Education and also became a member of the Elks Club in Nutley. The husband of the late Barbara Mae (Coady) Teresi, he is survived by his children, Florence Teresi, Alfonso Jr., Teresi, John M. Teresi and his wife Marie, Christopher Teresi and his wife Karen, Gerard Teresi and his wife Janice, Richard Teresi and his wife Louise, and Robert Teresi; his grandchildren,, Bianca, Luke, Arianna, Robert Jr., Jessica, Gerard Jr., Amanda, Vincent, Brittany, and Matthew; and great-grandchild, Angelo. Services arranged by the S.W. Brown and Son Funeral Home, Nutley.
