Hudson County’s Cantigas Women’s Choir is seeking women of all vocal ranges to join them for the Fall 2019 semester.
Interested singers are invited to join the first rehearsal of the season on Tuesday, Sept. 10 at 7 p.m. at the Mustard Seed School, 422 Willow Ave., Hoboken, and/or the 8:15 p.m. social hour at Moran’s Pub, 501 Garden St., Hoboken.
Under the tutelage of artistic director Hannah Carr, Cantigas is a diverse 40-person women’s choir that seeks to share the universal language of music. With musical selections hailing from countless countries across the world, each Cantigas season is a unique and wholly gratifying cultural experience for its members and their audience.
The fall season runs from September to December, culminating in a Winter Concert on Dec. 14. With community outreach at the core of their mission, the choir has, in recent years, sung with inmates at the Edna Mahan Correctional Facility for Women in Clinton, performed at Jersey City’s Big Read and Hoboken’s Night Out and caroled at the Alaris Nursing Home.
For membership-specific questions or details about joining Cantigas for the upcoming season, please contact firstname.lastname@example.org. All voice types are welcome, but Altos are particularly in demand.
For those unable to join but interested in becoming a supporter of the choir, consider attending the Winter Concert at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 440 Hoboken Avenue, Jersey City, on Dec. 14 at 7 p.m. To learn more about Cantigas and how to get involved or donate to the choir, visit www.cantigas.net.
Cantigas Women’s Choir, named after a medieval Spanish song form called a “cantiga,” is composed of about 50 women of varying ages and backgrounds, and brings women of the community together to explore the rich tradition of women’s singing. The group performs a broad spectrum of global music.
In addition to its own biannual concerts, the ensemble reaches out to community groups, including at the Cussack Home in Jersey City, on behalf of cancer survivors in Bayonne, and the Liberty Humane Society in Jersey City. Cantigas has also performed frequently at the NJ State Correctional Facility for women.
Hannah Carr, Artistic Director of Cantigas Women’s Choir, is a DMA candidate in conducting at Rutgers Mason Gross School of Music. Carr holds an MM in conducting from Yale University’s Institute of Sacred Music, an Advanced Diploma from the Liszt Academy in Hungary, and a BA in composition from Trinity College Dublin.
She has considerable experience conducting both youth and adult choirs and presently teaches undergraduate conducting and directs The University Choir, a mixed ensemble, at Rutgers Mason Gross.
