3K Walk for a cancer cure will be Sept. 22

In memory of James N. Rentas, this year’s 3K Walk Cancer Away event will take place Sept. 22 at Stephen R. Gregg Park, JFK Blvd., and 48th St., in Bayonne.

The organizers said in a statement, “Every year, countless individuals are impacted by cancer. Our mission is to Walk Cancer Away as we continue to celebrate those remembered and give strength to those still fighting this life-threatening disease.

“Walk Cancer Away invites everyone to participate in our annual family friendly walk event and join together to share the perseverance found inside each of us with those around us. With each step we take, with each story shared, and with each donation made we are one step closer to finding a cure.

“To date, we have raised over $700,000 for Dr. Nancy Kemeny’s Colorectal Research Fund at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and together with thousands of people supporting this momentous cause over the last 12 years we are committed to ultimately Walk Cancer Away Forever.

“Walk Cancer Away began as a walk in honor of James N. Rentas. Deeply impacted with his loss due to colorectal cancer, the Rentas family came together 12 years ago with the mission to help others inflicted with the disease.

“Oncologist Dr. Nancy Kemeny at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, who was the doctor treating James N. Rentas, mirrors that same goal. Her efforts and that of her team at MSKCC are focused on researching and implementing the most state of the art cancer care to overcome the disease and find a cure. Together they have made tremendous advancements over the years and have provided years of life to those facing adversity. In many cases, their continued efforts have led to full remission of the cancer in patients.

“With humility and the deepest gratitude we are thankful to all those who support and participate each year, because without you this would not be possible.

“Join us this year and we will make a difference together!

“This year immediately following the walk, we will celebrate at the park with:
live music, family activities, cornhole tournaments, food trucks, face painters, and much much more!
