GREEN ACRES DEDICATED TO RECREATION & OPEN SPACE

Dear Editor:

Garden State residents beware – your local park may be endangered…

Here in the most densely populated county in the most densely populated state, North Bergen, while Nicholas Sacco was North Bergen Mayor, Assistant Superintendent of Schools and a State Senator, placed North Bergen’s large 15-trailer preschool in Braddock Park, a park encumbered by, and supposedly protected by NJDEP Green Acres and National Park Service LWCF regulations.

Green Acres was supposed to inspect Braddock Park every 3 years for compliance, but it took 10 years before a violation notice was sent to North Bergen.

After much delay, North Bergen applied for a Green Acres “Diversion”, an attempt to keep the school in the park.
It claimed there wasn’t another location for the preschool.
Community outrage followed and Green Acres told North Bergen it must move the school out of the park by 08-31-21.
This impending move has prompted a reconfiguration of the entire school system which will cost taxpayers $20+ million to pay off a bond.

North Bergen also has to provide many millions of dollars in compensation for its violation, by creating new park land.
Green Acres unjustifiably lowered the compensation amount after North Bergen supplied the agency with false information which went unchecked.
For example, North Bergen claimed it was a poor Abbott school district; it was not.

It’s time for Green Acres to promptly and correctly resolve this matter and not let it happen again, in my or your community.
