Home Obituaries McCARTHY, JAMES MARK JR.

Funeral services took place Oct. 23 for James Mark McCarthy, Jr., 78, of Jersey City. He passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Oct. 18. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Frances; his daughters and sons-in-law, Maureen and John Drew Foye, Carol McCarthy, and Linda and Randy Cook, and his grandsons, John Drew, Thomas and Brian Foye. A life-long resident of Jersey City, Jim attended both Sacred Heart Grammar School and St. Aloysius High School. Upon his graduation from Snyder High School, Jim enlisted in the United States Marine Corp (USMC), where he served his country in various roles, including military dog training and as a sharp shooter. While serving in the USMC, on a trip to Washington, DC, Jim met Frances. Following his honorable discharge, Jim and Frances later married. They moved to Jersey City where they raised their family. Jim spent his entire professional career at Chubb & Son Insurance Company. Starting in the mailroom and working his way up to an insurance underwriter, Jim eventually retired as a vice president in the Marine Ocean Cargo Division after 30+ years. While at Chubb, Jim also taught at The College of Insurance in New York, where he enjoyed trying to stump his students with his “Marine Ocean Cargo Jeopardy Game.” His profession allowed him to travel all over the U.S. and many countries around the world, enjoying their cultures. Jim enjoyed reading, photography, and fishing whenever he could, and was an avid crossword puzzler. Through the years, he loved his family trips to the Jersey Shore and the Poconos, and always made sure Frances and the girls spent time with family in Washington, DC. In the last few years, Jim became very interested in genealogy and did extensive research on his family’s history. Through this pastime, Jim became an active member of the Hudson County Genealogical & Historical Society. Jim was preceded in death by his parents James and Genevieve McCarthy; and his sisters Margaret Berndt, Sister Patricia (Aunt Tricia) McCarthy and Kathleen McCarthy. He is also survived by his sisters-in-law Jo and Rose, and several nieces and nephews. Services arranged by the McLaughlin Funeral Home, Jersey City.
