McGOVERN, BERNARD P. 

A funeral mass was held Oct. 19 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, Murrells Inlet, S.C. for Bernard P. McGovern, 72, of Hoboken and Aynor, S.C. He passed away Oct. 8 in Conway, S.C. He was born in Jersey City to the late Cornelius and Margaret (Marren) McGovern. Bernard is survived by his wife Mary (Oliveti) McGovern; his sons, Bryan McGovern and Sean (Eileen) McGovern and granddaughter Cassidy McGovern; brother Neal (Ann) McGovern; sister Michele (Richard) Butka; sisters-in-law Sally Oliveti and Patricia (John) Compolongo; also, nieces Bryn (Charles) Baisley, Nicole (Michael) Pierce, Shannon (Mark) Frasier, and nephews Richard (Ana) Butka and Timothy (Megan) McGovern. Bernard was a loving, caring and compassionate husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. He will be deeply missed by all. During the Vietnam War, Bernard served with BRAVO Company B, 9th Infantry Division of the US Army. On March 17, 1969 he was one of two soldiers who volunteered to be helicoptered in to resupply a squad pinned down by the enemy. For his heroic action that night, he was awarded the Silver Star, the nation’s third-highest medal for heroism in combat. During his tour of duty, he was awarded eight additional medals, including the Air Medal, the Army Commendation Medal and the Gallantry Cross. Bernard will be buried with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. Services arranged by the Burroughs Funeral Home of Murrells Inlet, S.C.
