Small Business Saturday begins with free tote bags in Jersey City

Starting on Small Business Saturday, Nov. 30, more than 11,000 tote bags will be distributed to Jersey City shoppers along Central Avenue, thanks to the efforts of 48 local sponsors.

The bags come in three colors: blue, green, and yellow.

Working together through the Central Avenue Special Improvement District, area businesses continue the annual tradition of distributing “Shop Local, Shop Central Avenue/ Heights” tote bags to some of their favorite customers near the holidays.

Since this program started in 2015, the CASID has placed a combined 30,000 reusable tote bags on the street to change the bagging habits of local shoppers.

“We are happy to work together and do our part for Jersey City,” said Sanford Fishman, CASID president and pharmacist at Bond Drugs. “Jersey City’s ban on disposable plastic bags went into effect earlier this year, and some customers are still adjusting to the idea of having to bring their own bags. These stylish Central Avenue/ Heights tote bags are quite popular as many shoppers look forward to new bags each year.”

Many participating businesses will continue the giveaway through December while supplies lasts.  A list of participating businesses is available on CASID’s website, JCHeights.com.

Anyone who would like a reusable bag should request one during his or her next visit to the shopping district.

Shoppers will also be treated to Central Avenue’s annual holiday decorations, which include more than 130 lighting pieces and 40 festive banners spread throughout the district.

Jersey City has announced free two-hour parking in municipal lots between Thanksgiving Nov. 29  and New Year’s Day Jan.1.

Shoppers can also save half the sales tax on retail purchases at registered UEZ businesses.
