New Street fire leaves 13 homeless

A structure fire has displaced 13 occupants from their home on 9 New St., according to Fire Chief Keith Weaver.

The Bayonne Fire Department responded to the blaze at approximately 8:48 a.m. Responding units reported smoke and fire originating from the basement of the home.

Chief Weaver said that firefighters deployed two hoses to extinguish the fire in the basement. The Bayonne Fire Department was able to prevent the fire from spreading to the rest of the house as well as adjacent homes.

The two-alarm fire was placed under control around 9:23 a.m.

The Bayonne Office of Emergency Management and the Red Cross are assisting the occupants displaced by the fire.

According to Chief Weaver, the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
