Blood drive for 10 year old to be held at Bayonne High School

A blood drive will be held in Bayonne in honor of 10 year old Dantae Rodriguez, a 5th grader who urgently needs the community’s help

New Jersey Blood Services will host a blood drive on Saturday, Feb. 29th at the Bayonne High School’s Richard Korpi Ice Rink. From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., donors can give blood in support of Rodriguez at BHS at West 28th Street.

“Dantae is a 10 year old boy that fought through quite few challenges,” according to New Jersey Blood Services.

He was born with Salt-Wasting Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia, Heart Murmur, G6PD Deficiency, Sotos Syndrome, and Seizure Disorder. Rodriguez was later diagnosed with Autism and ADHD.

On top of that, in December of 2019, he was diagnosed with Leukemia.

Rodriguez is currently in 5th grade at Lincoln Community School.  He is currently in an inclusion classroom with the most amazing kids and amazing teachers, according to the press release.

Rodriguez is in choir, loves art, and his favorite subject is Science. He enjoys swimming, drawing, and The Philadelphia Eagles.

New Jersey Blood Services said appointments are recommended. However, all walk-ins are welcome.

Assemblyman Chiaravalloti of Bayonne appointed Majority Whip

Assemblyman Nicholas Chiaravalloti will now serve as Majority Whip for the current session of the New Jersey legislature. Assembly Speaker Craig Coughlin and Majority Leader Louis Greenwald officially announced the Assembly Leadership Team for the 219th session of the legislature on Feb. 6.

Part of the leadership roll out included two new leadership positions, Majority Whip and Policy Chair. According to the Speaker, the new positions were created in effort to bring more Assembly members into the decision-making process.

In his newly created role as Majority Whip, Chiaravalloti will work with the Majority Leader and the Speaker to garner support and votes for the majority’s legislative agenda. Chiaravalloti is currently vice-chair of the Assembly Human Services Committee and serves on the Commerce and Judiciary Committees.

Gather at Manifest Comics for a Magic Valentine’s Day

“A Magic: The Gathering” event will be held at Manifest Comics in Bayonne on Feb. 14. For $15, those interested can buy tickets to play Magic: The Gathering will fellows fan starting at 6 p.m. Manifest Comics is located at 766 Broadway.

Valentine’s Day Couples Yoga

BayOhm Yoga at 494 Avenue C in Bayonne will host Valentine’s Day Couples Yoga. For $40, couples can attend a yoga session on Feb. 14. from 6:00 PM to 7:15 PM. Knights of Columbus Scholarship announced

The Bayonne Knights of Columbus, Council 371, Star of the Sea will hold its annual scholarship exam for 8th grade Bayonne students who will be attending a Catholic high school. This exam will only be given to eligible 8th grade students whose father is a member of the Bayonne Knights of Columbus in good standing.

The exam will be given on Saturday, Feb. 29 at 10 a.m. at the Knights of Columbus hall, 669 Avenue C in Bayonne. A retired high school teacher with over 30 years of professional experience will administer the exam.

The winner will receive a $500 check per year for four years, payable to the Catholic high school they will attend.

To sign up for the exam, the name of the student, the name of the student’s current school, the name of the Catholic high school he/she will be attending, a parent’s phone number and email address for contact purposes, and the name of the father who is a member of Bayonne the Knights of Columbus in good standing must be sent to the Grand Knight.

The required information must be sent by Feb. 20 to Harold F. Delaney, Grand Knight of the Bayonne Knights of Columbus at 669 Avenue C, Bayonne, NJ 07002, or by emailing Harold F. Delaney, Grand Knight at pfnhfd@aol.com.

Bayonne Book Club Meetup

The Bayonne Book Club will meet on Wednesday, Feb. 19 to discuss its latest read. Currently the club is reading “Bad Monkey” by Carl Hiaasen. The group meets every third Wednesday at Broadway Diner at 1075 Broadway. The club is free to attend.
