A North Bergen man was arrested in connection with a 2019 accident involving a collision with pedestrians in Jersey City. According to the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office (HCPO), the man allegedly struck two pedestrians with his car while under the influence of narcotics in Nov. of 2019.
According to Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez, the man was identified as Lawrence Smith, 37. He was arrested on Feb. 10 on two counts of vehicular assault while under the influence.
Authorities said Smith was also allegedly driving without a valid driver’s license at the time of the accident.
Smith was arrested at the Prosecutor’s Office in Jersey City around 10:30 a.m. by the HCPO’s Regional Collision Investigation Unit.
He was arrested without incident following a detailed investigation by the Collision Investigation Unit. Subsequently, Smith was processed and transported to the Hudson County Correctional Facility in Kearny.
Smith has been charged with third-degree assault by auto while under the influence of narcotics, fourth-degree assault by auto while under the influence of narcotics, and driving without a valid driver’s license causing serious bodily injury.
The night of the accident
Jersey City Police officers responded on Nov. 23, 2019, to the intersection of Summit Avenue and Sherman Place in Jersey City after receiving a report that two pedestrians had been struck by a vehicle nearby.
Responding officers identified that the pedestrians on the scene, a mother and her son, were struck by a vehicle at that intersection around 11:30 p.m.
Authorities said that Smith, the alleged driver of the vehicle, remained at the scene of the collision. Smith was driving a 2009 Chevrolet Impala when the crash occurred.
According to the Prosecutor’s Office, the initial investigation by the Collision Investigation Unit found that Smith allegedly struck the two pedestrians in the marked crosswalk.
Smith was traveling southbound on Summit Avenue at Sherman Place when he struck the mother and son.
The 50-year-old mother was unresponsive at the scene with serious bodily injuries. HCPO said she was transported by Emergency Medical Services to Jersey City Medical Center to receive medical attention.
Her 22-year-old son suffered minor injuries as a result of the collision. He was also transported by EMS to JCMC for further medical treatment.
All charges are merely accusations against Smith. He is presumed innocent until found guilty.
