Virtual visitor parking permits launch in Hoboken

The Hoboken Parking Utility (HPU) has launched the Virtual Visitor Parking (VVP) permit system. All residents with a valid HPU online account can purchase and activate virtual visitor permits from any internet-enabled computer, tablet, or smartphone. Jersey City cop convicted of misconduct 

On Thursday, Feb. 13,  Jersey City Police Officer Denzel Suitt, 28, was convicted of official misconduct and theft by unlawful taking on charges that he stole cash from a Jersey City man on March 25, 2018 while on patrol. According to the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office, Suitt was also found guilty of official misconduct. The jury found him guilty of theft in the value of $500 or less. Sentencing has been scheduled for April 24.

North Bergen man arrested for DUI after allegedly striking two pedestrians in 2019

Lawrence Smith, 37, was arrested in connection with a 2019 collision with pedestrians in Jersey City. According to the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office, Smith allegedly struck two pedestrians with his car while under the influence of narcotics in November 2019

Jersey City Police officers on Nov. 23, 2019 reported that  a mother and her son were struck by a vehicle at Summit Ave. and Sherman Pl. around 11:30 p.m. The 50-year-old mother was transported to Jersey City Medical Center. Her 22-year-old son suffered minor injuries.

He was charged with vehicular assault while under the influence of narcotics.

Hoboken seeks residents for new Friends of Parks groups

Hoboken invites residents to join three newly formed “Friends of the Parks” groups: Friends of Church Square Park, Friends of Elysian Park, and Friends of Jefferson Park. The groups will gather people who have an interest in a specific park to help care for and manage that location working with the city’s Department of Environmental Services.

Detectives receive Narcan kits

Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez announced that all detectives in the prosecutor’s office will receive Narcan kits. Narcan can reverse the effects of an opioid overdose. Approximately 100 Narcan nasal kits were provided at no cost to the HCPO through a state program spearheaded by the New Jersey Department of Human Services.

In January, Suarez announced the launch in Hudson County of “Operation Helping Hand,” which aims to link narcotics users with recovery services at the time of arrest.

Recreation Dept. Hosts Football Awards Dinner

North Bergen Mayor Nicholas Sacco and Parks and Recreation Commissioner Hugo Cabrera, joined by Finance and Revenue Commissioner Julio Marenco and Public Safety Commissioner Allen Pascual, hosted this year’s annual Football Awards Dinner on Saturday, Feb. 8. Close to 750 participants attended.

Cabin Fever Festival announced in Hoboken 

On Sunday, Feb. 23 the Hoboken Family Alliance will host its annual Cabin Fever Festival, an open house for local businesses catering to kids. Attendees can sample kids classes, activities and summer day camps as well as  enjoy live music and dance performances.

The event takes place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Brandt Elementry School at 215 Ninth St. and costs $20 for non HFA members.

During the festival, HFA will award $15,000 in Community Neighbor Award Grants.

Hoboken residents can register for youth tennis and girls volleyball 

The Hoboken  Recreation Department will launch tennis and girls’ volleyball for the spring season. Volleyball is for girls in grades 6 – 8. The department has partnered with Tennis Approach to offer group lessons to children ages 6 to 14.

Arrest made in Jersey City cold case

On Feb. 3, members of the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Cold Case Unit arrested and charged Joel Esquijarrosa, 42, of Harrison, in connection with the Aug. 24, 2007 murder of Rafael Angel Aguero Espinoza in Jersey City. Esquijarrosa has been charged with murder, felony murder, robbery, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and unlawful possession of a weapon.

Katie Brennan case could go to trial 

The handling of a sexual assault allegation against a top aide in Phil Murphy’s campaign may go to trial, according to the Bergen Record.

Katie Brennan, an official in the administration, sued the Murphy campaign and one of Murphy’s aids Al Alvarez alleging that Alvarez sexually assaulted her in her home during the 2017 campaign. Alvarez has denied the allegations and filed a countersuit against Brennan.

The case will move to discovery, a pretrial procedure in which the parties share evidence and documents relevant to the case.
