Dear Editor:
The good news about climate change is that 97 percent of climate scientists agree that burning fossil fuels, such as coal, oil and gas, is the main driver of global warming. We also have a plan that thousands of economists say will be effective at solving that problem.
A bill before the U.S. House of Representatives, “H.R. 763 The Energy Innovation and Carbon Dividend Act” will allow us to apply the brakes and slow down our runaway fossil fuel freight train without derailing the economy. This bill will level the playing field by putting a price on carbon pollution while simultaneously putting that money back into Americans’ pockets in the form of a monthly dividend check.
Adoption of H.R. 763 will make the United States the world leader in the fight against climate change.
Representative Albio Sires, is a co-sponsor of this bill. We have less than 10 years to start reducing our emissions in order to avoid the worst of the storms, floods, droughts, fires, and food shortages that will come if we heat the earth by more than 2 degrees Celsius.
