ELSASSER, RUTH

A funeral service was held Jan. 31 for Ruth Elsasser, of Weehawken. She passed away peacefully on Jan. 27 after struggling with Parkinson’s Disease. Ruth was born in 1932 in Newark to Carl and Irene Immele who had emigrated from Germany in the 1920s. She was known for her beautiful smile and cheerful positive disposition and her amazing organizational abilities and natural leadership skills. She was a founding member of the Weehawken Environment Committee and long-time president, which was instrumental in preserving the famous view of the skyline from the cliffs of Weehawken and making certain the public has access to the Hudson waterfront forever. She fought to ensure the public walkway was built along the waterfront from the George Washington bridge south through Weehawken and as far as Jersey City. She was president for many years of the Weehawken Women’s Club. Ruth was a long-time member of the Park United Methodist Church in Weehawken. She also was a Cub Scout den mother and a Girl Scout leader. Ruth worked for many years as the office manager for the Humanities Department at Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken until she retired. She was married to her husband, Max, for 66 years. Ruth was predeceased by her parents, Carl and Irene Immele and her sister Gerda Mooney of Lancaster, Pa. She is survived by her husband, Max; her children, Tim (Judi) of White River Junction, Vt.; and April (Roland) of Leonia; her grandchildren, Molly, Colin and Ethan; her fraternal twin sister, Elizabeth (Bob); and many wonderful nieces and nephews. Services arranged by the Leber Funeral Home, Union City.
