Buddy Baseball flag raising

Buddy Baseball is back, and registration for the 2020 season is underway.  The league flag was raised on Monday at city hall where it will reside for a week before traveling to all Bayonne schools and then head to home field at the 11th Street Oval.

The Buddy Baseball program for developmentally and physically challenged youth is offered by the Bayonne Division of Recreation and open to residents ages 4 to 21. As part of the program, “buddies” will assist players according to their needs. This may include helping a player bat or field the ball, pushing a player in a wheelchair around the bases, or simply motivating the players. More than the skills of baseball are learned through the program. The league also provides the therapeutic and socialization benefits of participating in sports and the strengthening of participants’ self-esteem, as well as the disciplines of teamwork, sportsmanship, and fair play.

Games will take place in May and June at the 11th Street Oval. Every player will receive a full baseball uniform, including jersey, pants, socks, and hat.  There is no cost to participate in the Buddy Baseball League. To register, visit the Division of Recreation in City Hall Room #13, Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

For more information, and to become a buddy, call Pete Amadeo at the Division of Recreation at 201-858-6129 or email BAYONNEREC@AOL.COM .
