How to get tested for COVID-19 in Bayonne

A drive-thru testing site operates at Veterans Stadium

Now that testing has expanded to include all residents in Bayonne, the local Office of Emergency Management has put together a guide to help residents understand how to get tested during the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to the OEM, if you have a cough and shortness of breath accompanied by a fever, you should assume that you are positive.

Bayonne Medical Center (BMC) has been conducting drive-thru testing every day during the week at Veterans Stadium at the foot of West 25th Street by appointment only. Residents can get an appointment through their primary doctors.

Every doctor in Bayonne has received instructions on how to schedule their patients for an appointment at this site, according to OEM. If a doctor is unaware, residents should to tell him or her to call BMC for instructions.

OEM asks residents not to call City Hall COVID-19 hotlines or the OEM for assistance with appointments. Only a resident’s physician can make the appointment for the Veterans Stadium testing site.

Having a prescription for a test with no appointment will not get you tested. Only a doctor can schedule an appointment for this site.

While waiting to get tested, residents who are presumably positive should take steps to prevent the further spread of COVID-19. The results of the test will not change action plans given by a doctor.

“Immediately practice self-isolation and contact your doctor,” OEM said in the April 21 COVID-19 update. “You should stay home, but if you have difficulty breathing, call 9-1-1 immediately.”

Asymptomatic residents are not being tested. Currently, only those with symptoms are being scheduled for testing in Bayonne and across Hudson County.

Countywide testing continues

If residents have a cough or shortness of breath accompanied by a fever, they can call the Hudson County Regional Testing Center at 201-388-1097 or 646-862-1161.

During the call, residents will be asked to discuss symptoms. They must be pre-screened to make an appointment to be tested. No referral or doctor’s prescription is needed.

The drive-thru screening takes place in your vehicle. If needed, additional tests will be performed in a specially designated area.

The Testing Center operates from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Hudson Regional Hospital in Secaucus.
