Private funeral services took place April 30 for John James Shalhoub. He died on April 26 at his residence in Jersey City. He was born in 1935 in Bayonne, where he was raised. He graduated from Woodrow Wilson Elementary School and Bayonne High School, one year serving as Class President. John attended St. John’s University School of Pharmacy and graduated in 1956 with a Bachelor of Science degree. As a Registered Pharmacist, John worked his entire professional career in Bayonne, where he faithfully served the citizens of the community for 60 years of his life.
In 1958, John enlisted in the Army at Fort Dix. He then was transferred to Fort Sam Houston, TX where he trained with the medical corps and was a medical specialist. He served for several years in the New Jersey National Guard based in the Teaneck Armory. He did yearly training at Camp Drum, NY.
John married his wife, Patricia, in 1959 and together they raised a family of eight children in St. Paul’s Parish in the Greenville section of Jersey City. John was the very proud and dedicated father of four boys and four girls. For many years, he regularly worked long, unrelenting hours as a pharmacist and gave selflessly of himself to support his family and to educate his children. He was a hard-working and self-made man who was devoted to his family. He exemplified a paternal gentleness, generosity and love that will never be forgotten. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him, especially by his 11 grandchildren who brought him so much joy.
In 1964, he established Midtown Pharmacy in Bayonne, where he built a loyal customer following founded upon his values and personal attributes of kindness, trust, generosity, compassion and selfless service. Owned and operated by John for the entirety of 52 years, Midtown Pharmacy remained a local icon in Bayonne until it was sold in January 2016. Many current and former Bayonne residents will also fondly remember enjoying sundaes, egg creams, milk shakes, and ice cream cones while seated at the counter of the bygone-era soda fountain which John kept open for decades. For those who remember, John’s Midtown Pharmacy will always be their corner drugstore at 32nd Street & the Boulevard.
John was proud of Midtown Pharmacy and of having his children work there through the years. He was respected and loved by his family, friends and the many Bayonne families who relied upon him for help when their loved ones were sick. John’s personal touch, old-fashioned customer service, humility and genuine concern for people are remembered to this day by those that knew him.
He is survived by his wife, Patricia Mulcahy Shalhoub, to whom he was married for 61 years, and his eight children: John Shalhoub, Anna (Timothy) Burns, Patrick Shalhoub, Joseph (Angela) Shalhoub MD, Lisa Rose, Daniel Shalhoub, Catharine Shalhoub, Claire (Michael) Odierna, and by his loving grandchildren: Timothy Patrick Burns; Arianna and John James Shalhoub; Christopher, Katie, Nicholas and Matthew Odierna; and Charles, George, Emily and Sarah.
