Hoboken businesses launch charity funded by online takeout orders

Bona Vita Benefits  and Quality Greens Kitchen of Hoboken have joined forces to launch a weekly campaign, dubbed “Food for Thought Action,” which aims to provide meals to Hudson County’s front-line workers.

Rather than soliciting direct donations, the project is funded through online orders at Quality Greens Kitchen with 10 percent of proceeds automatically donated to feed local first responders and volunteer organizations.

Phillip Shetsen of Bona Vita Benefits and Steven Friedrich of Quality Greens Kitchen have set aside their own funds to sponsor the first 200 meals, which will be delivered to the Hoboken Police Department and Hoboken Fire Department this week.

Shetsen is the owner of Bona Vita Benefits, a local firm focused on providing individuals and businesses with insurance and financial services solutions.

“We’re calling on all our foodies and takeout patrons to support the cause,” said Friedrich. “The cost is fairly low; we just ask that you purchase a meal from us, and we are not adding any up charges; the funds will come out of our end, with BVB sharing the cost.”

To contribute, customers can order delivery or pickup using the promo code BonaVita20.

Customers can choose from a menu of salads and chef’s plates. Quality Greens Kitchen delivers throughout Hoboken, Jersey City, and parts of Weehawken and Union City.

The campaign will continue on a weekly basis, feeding new recipients each week.

“We are hoping to create a ‘win-win-win’ scenario here for everyone involved: takeout customers, the restaurant, and the essential workers,” said Friedrich. “The customers enjoy an excellent meal and support some amazing local causes in the process. QGK benefits by gaining new customers and establishing a more direct relationship with customers who may be ordering from third-party delivery sites with expensive commission structures.”

“Our first responders are facing a host of unknown variables daily, and it’s only right we find a way to provide our support in return,” Shetsen said. “We are aware of how insignificant a meal is in comparison to the sacrifices they are making, but it is our way of showing them that we acknowledge their efforts and appreciate what they are doing to keep us all safe.”

He said he is also making his team available to all first responders who need assistance during this time.

“It’s their job to help keep the public secure, and we’re happy to return the favor by helping them secure their financial goals,” he said.
