Private funeral services have been held for John V. Marto, 91, of Jersey City. He passed away peacefully on May 5 at Bayonne Medical Center. Born in Jersey City to the late Carmella and Giovanni Marto, he was a lifelong resident. John’s philosophy of life was shaped by the Great Depression. As the youngest child in a family of four brothers, he quickly learned how to adapt to new situations and provide for his family. As he grew older, he continued to be hardworking – for him there was no other way. He was a devoted family man, always putting family first. John was the former owner of the Barge Inn Restaurant and Tavern a downtown Jersey City icon, since 1963. He was also an amateur boxing champion with Ring 14, with 21 wins and 0 losses, the last 11 fights were knock outs in the first round. He was a passionate New York Yankees fan – his family would have to sit through endless innings on their three channel TV and were forbidden to switch the channel. One of his enjoyments was his daily walk to his beloved Holy Rosary Church, his peaceful place. John was loved by many people and touched many lives, helping anyone who needed it, refusing no-one. John was preceded in death by his wife, Marie, and sons Michael and Christopher. He is survived by his children; Rosemarie Romeo (spouse Rocco), John Marto, Linda Paldino (spouse Peter), Richard Marto, (spouse Dolly), Diane Garcia (spouse Louis), Patricia Marto, Sandra Bou (spouse Andre), Chrisjohnna Catanio, (spouse John), Gemma Gillen, (spouse Matthew). He is also the proud and loving grandfather of; Gia (spouse Jeffrey), Dawn (spouse Carl), Dana, John, Richard (spouse Lana), Justine (spouse Glen), Michelle (spouse Aaron) Christopher, Nicolette, Madison, Jacqueline, Juliana and John Jr., and of his great-grandchildren; Noah, Harper, Hudson, Connor, Blake, Francesca, Mila, Ava and Leo. A memorial Mass and Celebration of Life will be offered at a later date. Services arranged by the Levandoski-Grillo Funeral Home of Bloomfield.
