KOZAK, JANINA

A Memorial Mass will be offered at a later date for Janina Kozak of Jersey City, 96. She died May 8. Janina (Janka) was born in Warsaw, Poland to Andrzej and Helena Wnuk. Janka was a German forced labor camp survivor who courageously fled Germany on foot to escape being sent to Siberia after the war. After an arduous 10 day trek she arrived in Czechoslovakia where she lived until being reunited with her mother and sister back in Poland. In 1967 she and her mother emigrated to the United States where they were reunited with her brother. She settled in Jersey City and worked for many years as a seamstress at Shlesingers. She loved to spend her leisure time exploring the sights of NYC and enjoying family gatherings. Janka was sustained by her deep Catholic faith and her love of Poland and its heritage. She always maintained a positive attitude and was very interested in history and current events. She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister, Ludwika Kania and her brother, Jerzy Wnuk. She is survived by her sister-in-law, Teresa Wnuk, her two nieces, a nephew and nine great nieces/nephews. Due to the current health crisis, Janina was privately interred at the National Shrine of Our Lady of Czestochowa in Doylestown, Pa. Services arranged by the McLaughlin Funeral Home, Jersey City.
