SUTHERN, EUGENIA S.

Private funeral services have been held for Eugenia S. Suthern, 92. She passed away on April 10. Eugenia was a sister, daughter, aunt and a friend to all who knew her. Eugenia was the youngest of foursiblings; John, Charles and Mary, who have preceded her in death. She leaves behind a sister-in-law, niece, nephew, grandniece, grandnephew, 2 great-grandnephews and a great-grandniece. Eugenia was very respected and loved in the community. Eugenia S. Suthern, arrived in Jersey City in 1955, with her mother Jean and sister Mary. They were instructed by her uncle, an Episcopal priest in Chicago, to join the Church of the Incarnation. They instantly became devoted members of the church. Eugenia served in many positions on the local and diocesan levels. ECW and UBE among them. Once women were allowed to serve in positions which had been barred to them, Eugenia stepped forward and served as a Lector, Chalice Bearer, Eucharistic Minister, Senior Warden of the Parish, Parish Administrator and many more. A founding member of Episcopal Community Development Corporation. In 1960 she became Girl Scout leader and founder of Cadette GS troop #182 enriching the lives of many young ladies 12 to 14 years of age. Deepening her commitment to the Girl Scout movement by serving as secretary of the Board of Directors for Pavonia Girl Scout Council. Eugenia was by profession an educator hired by the Jersey City Board of Education, when she first arrived in 1955. After additional certifications, she taught Hearing Impaired Students. Eugenia was loved and will be missed. A memorial will be held at a later date due to the government restrictions caused by the COVID-19 Virus.
