Man charged in Hoboken cellphone thefts

On June 10, the Hoboken Police Department received a call at about 6:25 p.m. reporting a theft committed by two individuals on bicycles.

Officer Kyle Seper responded and met with the victim in the area of 7th and Hudson streets.

The victim reported that he was checking the weather forecast on his cellphone when a male on a bicycle snatched his cellphone out of his hands.

The victim stated that there was a second bicyclist with the alleged actor.

At 6:51 p.m., Hoboken Police Officers Shelby Seickendick and  Michael Aviles went to Fifth and Jefferson streets to meet up with another victim of a reported theft.

The female victim reported that she was talking with her mother on FaceTime, when her cellphone was snatched out of her hand by a male on a bicycle.

She reported that the incident occurred in the area of Eighth and Clinton streets.

She yelled out to a nearby bicyclist for help, but then believed the thief and the bicyclist were together.

Through investigation, Lieutenant Michael Costello apprehended one of the alleged actors in the area of 15th Street and Willow Avenue, and the second male allegedly fled the area.

The apprehended man was identified as Passaic resident Jose Cereno-Delrio, 19.

The female victim’s cellphone was found in the area of 16th and Clinton streets on the ground.

Jose Cereno-Delrio was charged with one count for each incident resulting in two counts of Theft and two counts of Conspiracy to Commit Theft.

Jose Cereno-Delrio’s charges were placed on a warrant, and he was transported to the Hudson County Correctional Facility.

If the identity of the second actor is learned, he will be charged with the same crime as that of Jose Cereno-Delrio, according to the police department,

Cereno-Delrio is innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
