Water main breaks during installation of new water main

During construction to install a new water main on Garden Street between 12th and 13th streets, a contractor broke the existing water main causing approximately 150 residents to temporarily lose access to water on Friday June, 19.

SUEZ will be conducting repairs to restore water access as soon as possible.

There are more than 41 miles of water mains in Hoboken. The majority of pipes range in age from 100 years and older, to as new as this year.

Hoboken has long suffered from water main breaks and flooding due in part to the age of the water mains.

Pressure fluctuations, vibrations, and seasonal changes in temperature, which often cause the cast-iron pipes to become brittle, can cause breaks.

Hoboken is in the midst of continuing with the first phase of its water main replacement project, which will replace 15 blocks, or 7,035 linear feet of Hoboken’s oldest water mains.

Construction began in September 2019, but was paused in March due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

As of April, more than 4,515 linear feet of new water mains have been installed, and 150 service lines were replaced as part of Phase I of the project.

Construction resumed on June 15 and will be completed by September.
