New Jersey Assemblywoman Angelica Jimenez has been named the 2020 Legislator of the Year by the New Jersey Psychological Association (NJPA).

Jimenez represents the 32nd Legislative District of New Jersey, which includes Guttenberg, North Bergen, West New York, Secaucus, and numerous other municipalities throughout the region.

Each year, the NJPA honors a New Jersey Legislator who has sponsored or championed legislation that directly benefits psychologists and or consumers of psychological services.

“Your legislative efforts over the years have placed you as one of the most respected voices on health care in the State of New Jersey,” wrote NJPA President Lucy Takagi, PsyD, and NJPA Executive Director Keira Boertzel-Smith.

“Your leadership in Hudson County, your initiatives to protect and insure the health of NJ children and adults, your recovery from COVID-19 and subsequent initiative to address insurance audits and claims payments for healthcare providers during the pandemic, your own blood donations after your recovery, are just a few examples of why you deserve this recognition.”

She will receive the award at the Virtual NJPA Fall Conference awards ceremony on Oct. 16.

Her battle with COVID-19

This year has not come without its trials and tribulations for Jimenez. She came down with COVID-19 at the onset of the pandemic.

Jimenez, a West New York native, tested positive at Holy Name Medical Center in Teaneck on Sunday, March 29. She self-quarantined and survived the virus, crediting her daughter for keeping her spirits high.

After recovering at home, Jimenez returned to work at the Assembly and has been powering forward since.

Jimenez is the Deputy Speaker of the Assembly as well as the Vice-Chair of the Regulated Professions Committee.

“Thank you, NJPA for this honor!” Assemblywoman Jimenez said in a statement on social media.
