Local residents have held a memorial vigil for a Bayonne native who passed away in a tragic car crash in North Carolina.

Jada Morales Moore, 21, and a new mother, who was driving with her three-month-old daughter, was killed in a multi-car collision involving a moving truck.

Moore was driving in her Hyundai Accent on Billy Graham Parkway on June 14. According to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police, Moore stopped at a red light at approximately 5:40 p.m., when a U-Haul truck slammed into the rear of her car.

The collision with the U-Haul caused a collision with the two cars in front of Moore.

The Charlotte Fire Department responded and assisted in removing three people trapped in a Hyundai involved in the crash.

Moore was pronounced dead at the scene. Her infant daughter was taken to the hospital in critical condition, according to police.

According to authorities, Robert Shields, Jr. was identified as the driver of the U-Haul. Shields suffered non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

Shields, 47, has been charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle, failure to reduce speed to avoid a collision, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

A solemn vigil

Jada Moore

Moore was a BHS graduate and lifelong Bayonne resident prior to her move to North Carolina.

In response to her sudden and tragic death, many of her friends and family in Bayonne put together a vigil in her honor on June 20.

Mayor James Davis was at the vigil to offer his condolences.

“Family and friends of Jada Moore held a vigil this evening. Jada, a 21-year-old Bayonne neighbor, her life just beginning, tragically died in a horrific traffic accident in North Carolina earlier this week,” Mayor Davis said. “Jada’s three-month old baby girl was also injured, and we are all praying for her full recovery.

Davis continued, “The Bayonne community mourns Jada’s loss, and we all stand behind Jada’s mom, Shanna, and her entire family during this difficult time.”

Fundraiser in memory

A fundraiser has been set up on GoFundMe for Jada’s mother, Shanna McKennan, to help pay funeral expenses

“We are raising this money for the sudden death of my 21-year-old daughter for funeral and memorial expenses,” Ms. McKennan said on the fundraiser webpage. “Every donation will be put toward putting my daughter to rest and helping fix her body since the accident was so bad.”

She continued, “Also my two-month-old granddaughter was with her and is in critical condition. Pray for our baby please as she recovers.”

Donations will also be used to help get Jada’s body back to Bayonne, so her family and friends can say their final goodbyes.

“This was so sudden and so heartbreaking, Jada was just becoming the woman she wanted to be and a new mom,” Jada’s mother wrote. “She is loved very much and will be really missed.”

Currently, the fundraiser has raised $10,315 out of its $15,000 goal.
