Man arrested after large fight in the middle of the street in Bayonne

Police said the 34-year-old allegedly assaulted a 20-year-old victim

After a large street fight, a Bayonne man is facing charges of aggravated assault on June 20.

A man was taken into custody at approximately 6:25 p.m. from the area of Merritt Street and Avenue C, the Bayonne Police Department said.

Officers responded to the area of 32nd Street and Avenue C on a report of a large fight in the middle of the street.

Fighting in the street

During the on-scene investigation, officers learned that two black colored sedans pulled into the area where numerous males exited the vehicles, one of whom was identified as Keith Cunniffe Jr.

According to police, Cunniffe Jr., a 34-year-old male, began to punch a 20-year-old male victim numerous times about the face. The victim suffered facial injuries as a result of the assault and was treated at the Bayonne Medical Center.

The males then retreated into their vehicles and fled northbound, authorities said.

Officers were then able to locate the vehicle described by a witness in the area of Merritt Street and Avenue where they conducted a motor vehicle stop.

During that investigation, the occupant of the vehicle was positively identified as Cunniffe Jr. and was placed under arrest for aggravated assault.

Burglary and theft

The Bayonne Police Department also arrested and charged a local man for burglary and theft after the man allegedly stole loose change from a parked car on June 21.

Anthony Bermudez, a 24-year-old from Bayonne, was taken into custody at approximately 3:51 a.m. from the area of West 22nd Street, police said.

Officers responded to the area on a report of a male, later identified as Bermudez, breaking into a parked vehicle. Upon arrival to the area, officers were met by the 70 year old male victim and Bermudez.

During the on-scene investigation, it was¬†confirmed that Bermudez had illegally entered the victim’s vehicle and removed loose change. Bermudez was¬†placed under arrest.

According to authorities, a search after the arrest led to the recovery of the theft proceeds.

Police also discovered¬†Bermudez was wanted on three outstanding arrest warrants including two out of Bayonne and one out of the HC Sheriff’s Office.

Shoplifting from WalMart

Later in the day, police arrested a woman after she allegedly shoplifted more than $500 in merchandise from WalMart.

Ottanee Turner, a 36-year-old Jersey City woman, was taken into custody at approximately 5:01 p.m. from Walmart for shoplifting $573.58 worth of merchandise, according to authorities.

During the arrest process, police said Turner pulled away from the officers and refused to be handcuffed. As a result, she was additionally charged with allegedly resisting arrest.

The above charges are merely accusations. The defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
