Investigation underway after two bodies found in Jersey City

The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Unit is investigating two bodies pulled from the water hours apart in Jersey City over the weekend.

According to the prosecutor’s office, on Saturday, July 4, shortly after 7:30 a.m., members of the Jersey City Police Department and the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Unit responded to the Hudson River near the end of Morris Canal Park in Jersey City on reports of a female in the water.

The victim, a 22-year-old woman from Manhattan, was pronounced deceased at 7:43 a.m. at the scene.

Just before 1 p.m., that same day, the Jersey City Police received a call of a second body found in the Morris Canal, approximately 50 feet from the first victim.

The victim, later identified as Umair Saleh, 23, of Edison, was pronounced deceased at 1:08 p.m. at the scene.

The cause and manner of death of both victims is pending the findings of the Regional Medical Examiner.

The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Unit and the Jersey City Police Department are actively investigating the deaths.
