The victim suffered injury to his calf

On July 4, a Bayonne man was charged with aggravated assault after allegedly clubbing a construction worker when the worker asked the man to move his car.

Bernardino Ortiz Jr., 60, was taken into custody at 12:45 p.m. from the area of West 33rd Street. Officers responded to the area on a report of an assault.

According to the male victim, 43, while working on the roof of an area building, he observed a red vehicle park in the alley of the property without permission.

Police said the victim repeatedly requested the driver, later identified as Ortiz Jr., to move the vehicle from the property to avoid any possibility of damaging the vehicle with roofing debris.

After Ortiz refused, the victim descended from the roof to request Ortiz to move his vehicle face to face, again stressing that he did not want to damage the vehicle with roofing debris.

Ortiz allegedly became aggressive and removed an anti-vehicle theft device, the club, from his vehicle. Police said Ortiz then struck the victim in the leg with the club, causing injury to the victim’s calf.

Ortiz was charged with aggravated assault and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.
