Funeral services took place June 30 for James Walter Venable. He was born Oct. 16, 1930 in Oxford N.C to the parents James and Mary Venable. James, who was also called “Yogi,” started his education at Mary Potters Elementary school in Oxford N.C. James graduated from Bayonne High School and immediately enlisted in the U.S Navy where he sailed the waters on the battleship USS. Missouri and served his country during the Korean War. He often spoke about his love for the Navy and the experience in Japan, Korea, and Hawaii and of course Norfolk Va, his home port. James retired from Oriole Chemical Carriers as a truck driver for over 35 years. During his retirement he spent his time tending his garden and his passion for playing pool. He joined the APA somewhat of a skilled player participating in tournaments. After every tournament he would come home and say “Swoobs! I don’t think I can be beat!” but when he lost he would say “Swoobs! I beat myself.” James will be missed by so many, his  wife, Ruby Venable; his children: Danielle, James Anthony, Jacqueline, Christopher; grandchildren, Richard, Britni (Justin), Briahn, Tre, Gabrielle, Paige; Sister-in-laws: Tina Venable, Josephine Wright. Services arranged by the West Funeral & Cremation Service, Bayonne.
