North Bergen mourns the loss of special police officer Steve Bonilla

Bonilla was assigned to the School Resource Unit and the Township Municipal Courts

North Bergen Mayor Nicholas Sacco announced the death of local police officer Steve Bonilla on July 2.

“It’s a sad day in North Bergen we lost one of our NBPD Special officers,” Mayor Sacco said. “We offer our deepest condolences to his family.”

Bonilla was a police offer in North Bergen since 2017. A year later, he was assigned to the School Resource Unit and the Township Municipal Courts.

According to Mayor Sacco, he was loved by all of the students in the schools he worked at as well as by his colleagues and friends.

The North Bergen Police Department also posted a tribute in his honor on social media.

“It is with a heavy heart that the North Bergen Police Department announces the passing of Special Law Enforcement Officer Steven Bonilla,” the NBPD announced on Facebook. “Bonilla has been a member of the North Bergen Police Department since April 2017. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Bonilla family.”

It is not clear how officer Bonilla passed away.

Honoring the fallen

Mayor Sacco announced arrangements for Bonilla on July 9.

A wake will be held for Officer Bonilla on Tuesday, July 14 from 2:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at the Vainieri Funeral Home at 5923 Kennedy Blvd.

The church service will take place on Wednesday, July 15 at 10:00 a.m. at Nazareth Baptist Church at 5800 Palisades Ave in West New York.
