MURPHY, MAUREEN J.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at Saint Aedan’s on July 3 for Maureen J. Murphy, of Jersey City. She passed away peacefully at her home, after a brief battle with cancer, surrounded by her family and many friends on June 28, 2020. She was 73. Maureen was born and raised in Jersey City. A Jersey Girl at heart, she resided her entire life in a city she loved, and that city will forever be in her heart. She was a graduate of St. Aloysius High School in Jersey City. Maureen’s career started in the 1960’s, when she worked for the Jersey City Fire Department and then moved on to the Hudson County Sheriff’s Department in the Bureau of Criminal Investigations (BCI). She moved-on and served as secretary to three Hudson County Sheriff’s: Sheriff John Gillen, Sheriff Peter Dinardo and Sheriff Dominick Pugliese. During her service as secretary to Sheriff Peter Dinardo, he urged her to go to the Jersey City Police Academy to become a Hudson County Sheriff’s Officer. Maureen graduated from the Jersey City Police Academy “Class 50″ on July 26, 1984. After Sheriff Pugliese’s term, Maureen was promoted to Detective, then Sergarant and finally, retired from the Sheriff’s Department as Lieutenant on July 1, 2010. She loved serving the citizens of Hudson County and more importantly, loved helping other people and always believed in doing the right thing. Maureen was extremely proud of her Irish heritage, she was for many years a part of the Jersey City Saint Patrick’s Day Parade Committee and was honored in 1995 as Irish Police Officer, an honor she loved and talked with such joy about. She was also a member of the Jersey City Police Emerald Society, New Jersey Fraternal Order of Police ‘FOP” and New Jersey Honor Legion. In her early years, Maureen was very involved in the Hudson County Political scene. She made many friends over the years that she still cherished to this day. Maureen was the cherished daughter of Sadie V. Murphy (née Kulakowski) and the late Bernard G. Murphy of Little Ferry. Beloved sister to Richard Murphy and his wife Rika and Patricia Lazzaro (née Murphy) and her husband Joseph and the late Bernard Murphy “Boy” and his late wife Mille. She was the beloved mother of Brian Coyne and Erin Kochanski (nee Coyne) and her husband Glen. Cherished grandmother “Ma” to Kiley Rose Kochanski. Services arranged by the McLaughlin Funeral Home, Jersey City.
