This is Census Push Week across New Jersey. The New Jersey state government, county and municipal governments, and community organizations are all asking residents to get themselves counted right now in Census 2020. Through telephone calls, leaflet distributions, and letters to religious leaders, we have been urging the people of Bayonne to take part in Census 2020 now.
It is vitally important for you to take part in the census. Millions of dollars in federal funding for Bayonne over the next ten years depend on you. For starters, Bayonne receives its own Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) from the federal government. That grant is based on our population size. We get more than $1 million per year from that grant. The block grant funds street-paving, senior citizen meal programs, and housing rehabilitation, among other programs. If our official population count were to fall below 50,000, we would no longer get our own Community Development Block Grant.
Several federal programs use census data to determine funding. These programs include Medicare Part B, Medicaid, the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program (SNAP), and highway planning and construction. Census information helps determine federal funding for Special Education and Title I, a program that funds basic skills education. Census numbers are used to calculate the federal-state mixture of funding for Medicaid, the Children’s Health Insurance Program, and Transitional Aid to Needy Families.
In Census 2020, you can get yourself counted online, via telephone, or with a paper form.
If you wish to be counted in the census online, please go to www.2020census.gov, then follow the directions.
If you received a paper census form in the mail, and if you would like to use it, you should fill out the form and mail it back.
If you would like to be counted by telephone, there are phone numbers for English and several other languages. Here are census phone lines for some languages spoken in Bayonne: English, 844-330-2020; Spanish, 844-468-2020; Polish, 844-479-2020; Arabic, 844-416-2020; and Tagalog, 844-478-2020. Several other languages are also available.
Census information about individuals is confidential. There is no question about citizenship. There is no question about your immigration status. If you live in Bayonne now, you are one of us. We want you to be counted, regardless of where you or your family came from.
Everyone counts. It’s time to be counted. Thank you for helping our community have a successful census.
