In a special 2018 referendum, North Bergen voters approved a $60 Million bond which the Township sought to acquire the unused Hi-Tech school campus, allowing the creation of a junior high school and a reconfiguration of all NB schools.
This school reconfiguration was designed to enable the NB Preschool to move out of Braddock Park (the preschoolers would go to elementary schools), ending 20 years of non-compliance with NJDEP Green Acres regulations that protect Hudson County’s Braddock Park for recreational, not school purposes.
Voters approved the bond initiative AFTER Township and BOE officials assured the public that the preschool would be moved out of Braddock Park as a result of the reconfiguration.
Officials have now reneged on their promises and betrayed the public’s mandate; they say the preschool will stay where it is.
20 years of non-compliance with State regulations will continue indefinitely.
This blatant fiduciary irresponsibility, waste of taxpayer money and disregard of the public’s mandate needs to end immediately.
It began 20 years ago when, without State permission, NB removed a State funded (Green Acres), ball-field in Braddock Park by illegally diverting the park land with the preschool, and illegally diverting the parking lot adjacent to the preschool.
Protect Braddock Park for recreational, not school use!
