Dear Editor:
I am watching new high-rise and mid-rise buildings being constructed in every Ward of Jersey City. The development projects taking place are both impressive and overwhelming at times.
As a resident who understands development in our city is inevitable and has its merits, I am concerned the local government is not doing enough in the area of youth recreational activities. I was disappointed that city officials saw more value in creating sanctuaries for birds rather than creating recreational spaces for our youth.
These are the same youth we criticize for their use of illicit drugs – marijuana or meth, depending on the neighborhood they live in. If there is a ray of hope, it is in Ward F where local officials are working to establish Jersey City’s first public recreation and STEM facility.
I am hoping this will not become another broken promise by the very people who are in positions to create opportunities for the people they represent. I am hoping the Frederick Douglass STEM Recreation Center actually gets built very soon. When do we say “enough is enough” as we watch so many young people, from all our communities, get caught up in negative situations?
I am hoping city officials get this one right. Our children’s lives depend on it.
